چکیده

In the peripheral nerve trunks of vertebrates, the distance between the nodes of Ranvier is normally greater on fibres of larger diameter than on those of smaller size (Ranvier, 1875; Key and Retzius, 1876). At the time of myelination during development , internodal length is uniformly short, the nodes being spaced about 150 to 300 ,u apart. Each inter-node represents the territory of an individual Schwann cell and it is of interest that the basic length of Schwann cells in tissue culture is of this order (Weiss and Wang, 1945). As growth proceeds, the number of nodes normally remains constant and the internodes therefore increase in length (Boycott, 1904). It has been shown that there is a direct pro-portionality between internodal length and the growth in length of the part in which the nerve lies (Vizoso, 1950; Thomas, 1955). All the fibres in a peripheral nerve trunk do not become myelinated at the same time and those that become myelinated later remain of smaller diameter (Thomas, 1956). As these fibres will be stretched less during growth, their internodal length will be shorter The dependence of internodal length on growth is also shown by the observation that in nerve fibres that have regenerated after Wallerian degeneration in an adult animal when growth has ceased, intemodal length is short on fibres of all diameters During development, the growth rates of inter-nodal length and fibre diameter differ and the precise relationship between these two variables in a nerve is therefore complex and alters during development (see Thomas, 1955). In adult mammalian nerves, including man, it is approximately linear

Internodal length of sural nerve fibres in chronic occlusive vascular disease.

Changes with age in internodal length in the sural nerve in man have been discussed by Lascelles and Thomas (1966). They reported their findings in the sural nerve obtained at necropsy in 14 subjects of ages ranging from 18 to 80 years. In the 10 subjects under the age of 65 years the correlation between internodal length and the maximum diameter of single nerve fibres was found to be close, es...

Myelinated fibres in the human paravertebral sympathetic chain; quantitative studies on white rami communicantes.

Myelinated fibres in the human sympathetic paravertebral chain were examined histologically and in single teased fibre preparations in various age groups in subjects dying from disorders not affecting primarily the autonomic nervous system. An increase in fibre density predominantly due to an increase in the number of small fibres was found in older subjects. A correlation between internodal le...

Studies on Sural Nerve Biopsies in Endemic Skeletal Fluorosis

Sural nerve biopsies from 13 patients with radiologically confirmed skeletal fluorosis were studied for myelinated fibre densities, frequency distribution of their diameters, and single teased nerve fibre preparations. It was observed that most of the biopsies showed a marked reduction in myelinated fibre densities with more than half of them involving the smaller fibres of less than 7 gm diame...

Pure neural Leprosy: A case report

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease endemic in Iran that mainly involves skin and peripheral nerves. Leprosy has several clinical forms. One of them is “Pure neural leprosy”. The diagnosis of this form is delayed due to lack of clinical signs in other tissues and can lead to permanent deformity. I will discuss my experience for 20 years in the diagnosis and treatment of this form of leprosy...
